Sunday 21st August saw the culmination of all 3 Club Championships, Gents, Ladies & Junior. See images on left of finalists, and winners on the right receiving their trophies
GENTS:
In the morning semi finals 7 times winner Andy Farmer ran out 4&3 winner over Brian Smith, with Alastair Lyle defeated Calum Morrison by a margin of 5&4.
In the afternoon final, Alastair got off to a flyer going 4 up through 5 before Andy managed to peg it back to only 1 down playing 16. Alastair’s approach shot found the centre of the green, whilst Andy overshot into the rough at the back, eventually making a bogey leaving Alastair 2 up with 2 to play. A half at 17th was enough for Alastair to achieve victory by 2&1. A first Gents Club Championship for Alastair at Kilmacolm, to add to his previous 3 successes as Club Champion at Old Course Ranfurly. A well deserved win, in a match played in the best sporting traditions. Both players deserve praise for their standard of golf and sportsmanship.
Alastair received his tropy fromClub Captain Ian Kerr.
LADIES:
Once again Megan Briggs reached the final of the Ladies Championship where she met Anabel Kane. In the early stages it was nip and tuck, but eventually Megan produced a run of birdies and defeated Anabel 5&4 to record her 8th straight win in the Championships. Both were commended on the standard of golf displayed on the day.
Ladies Captain Rena Simpson is seen presenting the trophy to Megan.
JUNIORS:
In the Junior Championship the final was contested between Paul Reilly (2nd year running) and David Slack.
Again this was a close and keenly contested final, with each player giving their all. Paul managed eventually to overcome the challenge from David to win for the second consecutive year. As he stated at the presentation his target is 3 in a row before he leaves the junior ranks, a challenge that will be keenly met by David and the other juniors no doubt..
Jim Mackie, our Junior Convener, looks forward to having both these talented golfers in our Junior Newton Shield team for 2012.
Jim Mackie presented Paul with the trophy.
